As the weather turns colder and Christmas draws near, our dayhomes have been filled with excitement and festive cheer. Recently, our theme has been all about “Gingerbread & Christmas,” bringing warmth, creativity, and plenty of sweet fun into our classrooms.

🍪 Why Gingerbread?

Gingerbread people and gingerbread houses are classic Christmas symbols—sweet, warm, colourful, and full of fairy-tale charm that children instantly love. The idea of gingerbread houses comes from European winter traditions and became even more popular through the story Hansel and Gretel. This theme naturally extends into storytelling, art, music, math, sensory exploration, and hands-on play, making it perfect for young learners.

🍪🎄 Highlights From Activities

Throughout December, the children had a wonderful time exploring gingerbread and Christmas-themed activities, filled with creativity, movement, and joyful learning. They:

  • Enjoyed different versions of The Gingerbread Man story and discussed the various endings

  • Created their own gingerbread characters and decorations

  • Built gingerbread houses and a collaborative “Gingerbread Town” using blocks, cardboard, clay, and other open-ended materials

  • Designed gingerbread-themed collages, paintings, and festive crafts

  • Explored gingerbread scents through hands-on sensory play

Alongside our gingerbread theme, children also participated in a variety of Christmas activities, including:

  • Christmas tree art, sweater collage art, and dot painting

  • Fine motor activities such as cutting Santa’s beard and making candy canes

  • Gross motor games like wreath ring toss, balancing on Santa’s path, and sleigh ride play

  • Music and movement with classic Christmas songs such as Jingle Bells and We Wish You a Merry Christmas

  • Group activities like decorating our classroom Christmas tree and teamwork games

  • Early literacy and numeracy experiences, including learning the letter C, Christmas word recognition, and number matching

The classrooms were filled with imagination, laughter, and focused little learners. Seeing the children proudly share their creations and collaborate with friends made December truly magical ✨🎅

🎨 Learning Through Play, Growing Through Creativity

Through these activities, children strengthened:

  • Fine-motor skills and hand-eye coordination

  • Language and storytelling abilities

  • Creativity and imagination

  • Teamwork and communication

  • Math, observation, and early problem-solving skills

🎄 A Warm and Joyful Season
